This week we are going to be looking at Mary Magdalene.
Mary Magdalene’s story is told in all four New Testament Gospels. She is prominently featured as a loyal follower of Jesus, a witness to his crucifixion and burial, and the first person to see him after the resurrection.
Her story unfolds across these key Bible passages:
- During Jesus' Ministry: In Luke 8:1-3, Mary is named as a devoted disciple from whom Jesus cast out seven demons. She is noted for traveling with Jesus and using her own resources to support his ministry.
- The Crucifixion and Burial: All four Gospels place Mary at the cross. She is mentioned in Matthew 27:56, Mark 15:40, and John 19:25. She also stayed to watch where his body was laid in the tomb Matthew 27:61, Mark 15:47.
- The Resurrection: Mary is the first to discover the empty tomb. Most notably, in John 20:11-18, the risen Jesus appears directly to her and commissions her to tell the other disciples—earning her the historical title "Apostle to the Apostles"
